What Comes First?

I observed that whenever people are in that phase where nothing seems to be working out, the first thing they do is to run to God in prayer and ask him to solve the problem. At first thought, that sounds like a good strategy and the right thing to do, but a closer look at scripture, reveals something else.

2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV
[14] If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Did you notice that God said you should do something before you pray? He said first humble yourself then pray.

"If my people called by my name will humble themselves and pray".

Ignoring the action God put before prayer, is part of the reasons people experience constant prayer failure. Meaning they pray but do not get results. No wonder God said if you're proud I will frustrate your efforts. But if you're humble you can expect grace and help from above.

James 4:6 KJV
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Examine yourself

  • Do you have a proud heart, attitude, and lifestyle?

  • Do you secretly think you're better, more spiritual, more knowledgeable than others?

  • Do you find it difficult to admit wrong, apologize, or accept correction?

  • Do you find it difficult to accept other people's opinions who do not match yours?

  • Is your attitude that of it's either my way or it's not a good idea?

  • Do you select who you relate with based on your opinion of them as matching up to a certain standard and disregard others because you feel they are beneath you in one way or the other?

If you've answered yes to these. You have a proud heart and that attitude won't get you far with God.

Remember our scripture text.

You need to humble yourself then pray.

If you are dealing with pride, don't focus on asking God to solve all that is not going well in your life. Go to him and ask him to help you deal with pride. A humble heart will naturally attract God's grace and the favor of God and men. Go for humility you gain more than you can imagine.
